“The most inspiring moment for me in the film was when Igor reveals to Valerie that it’s the pearls in the earrings that give them their power, and to me it was like saying that it’s the magic inside you as an individual that guides you through the perils of life. You just got to listen to yourself. And it just struck me that it’s such a wonderful premise of the whole film and it completely inspired me to write a song. [Valerie] was one of those songs I wrote in 10 minutes, and it seemed very natural response for me to put it into this simple folk song.”
